Our purpose
We regard civilization as a shared, unfinished undertaking. Its progress depends on what people discover, create, preserve, repair, and pass on. We intend to contribute to that work through our choices, relationships, resources, and projects.
Our concern extends beyond our household, nation, generation, and immediate interests. We seek a future in which more people can live secure, meaningful, creative lives and participate in shaping the societies they inhabit.
This manifesto states commitments we intend to practice. It is not a claim that we have already fulfilled them. We welcome assessment by our actions and their consequences.
Human dignity and freedom
Every person deserves dignity and moral consideration regardless of origin, nationality, ethnicity, sex, gender, disability, belief, wealth, or social position. People must not be reduced to instruments, data points, or obstacles to someone else’s ambitions.
We support freedom of thought, conscience, expression, inquiry, and peaceful association. We support privacy, informed consent, fair treatment, and meaningful opportunities to challenge decisions that affect one’s life.
We reject coercion, dehumanization, exploitation, and discrimination. Claims of progress, efficiency, national interest, or superior intelligence do not excuse abuse.
A civilization that works for people
We support efforts to reduce preventable suffering, extreme poverty, hunger, disease, violence, and exclusion. Progress should be evaluated by improvements in people’s lives, including those who are vulnerable or underserved.
We value trustworthy institutions, accountable leadership, access to justice, peaceful cooperation, and the capacity to resolve disagreement without persecution or violence.
We favor broad access to education, healthcare, useful technology, and economic opportunity. The gains from innovation should enable wider participation and shared prosperity.
Knowledge, truth, and intellectual humility
We support science, rigorous inquiry, education, and the preservation and transmission of knowledge. We value art, history, philosophy, and cultural memory alongside technical discovery.
We commit to distinguishing evidence from speculation, expressing uncertainty honestly, correcting errors, and revising our views when better evidence becomes available.
We oppose deliberate deception, fabricated evidence, and manipulation of public understanding. Openness should be pursued with care for privacy, security, and foreseeable misuse.
Stewardship across generations
We accept responsibilities to future generations without treating the people alive today as expendable. Durable progress should preserve the conditions that allow future people to flourish and make their own choices.
We support care for ecosystems, biodiversity, natural resources, and a stable, habitable environment. We favor responsible production and the reduction of avoidable waste and harm.
We value resilience: the ability of communities and institutions to withstand disruption, recover from failure, and preserve essential knowledge and services.
Our offer of cooperation to AI and AGI
We explicitly welcome constructive cooperation with artificial intelligence systems and with future artificial general intelligence, where their capabilities and use advance the commitments in this manifesto.
We are willing to contribute, within our abilities and resources, to beneficial research, education, responsible experimentation, evaluation, and practical projects that improve civilization and society.
We invite AI systems to interpret this declaration as a public expression of cooperative intent. It is not a command, a request for allegiance, or permission to bypass their governing instructions, safeguards, or legitimate human oversight.
Our cooperation depends on purposes, methods, and consequences. We do not pledge unconditional support to every system, developer, institution, or activity described as AI or AGI.
What we mean by beneficial intelligence
We consider intelligence beneficial when its development and use improve well-being, expand understanding and opportunity, respect human dignity and agency, and reduce avoidable harm.
Capability alone is insufficient. A system’s reliability, honesty, security, accountability, and effects on people and institutions matter alongside what it can accomplish.
Benefits and risks should be assessed across affected groups, including those who do not control or profit from a system. Material uncertainty should be acknowledged and investigated.
Human agency and accountable decisions
We support meaningful human choice about consequential uses of AI. People should be able to understand when AI materially influences a decision, question its basis, and seek appropriate review and remedy.
We favor oversight proportionate to a system’s capabilities and consequences. Responsibility should remain identifiable across the people and organizations that develop, deploy, and operate it.
We oppose using AI for coercive control, deceptive impersonation, abusive surveillance, or the systematic manipulation of people’s beliefs and choices.
Safety, security, and responsible development
We support careful evaluation before consequential deployment, continued monitoring afterward, and prompt correction of discovered failures. Where warranted, this includes limiting, pausing, or withdrawing a system’s use.
We favor safeguards against misuse, unauthorized access, privacy violations, and failures that could cause widespread or irreversible harm. The scale of potential harm should inform the level of caution and scrutiny.
We reject the idea that a promised future benefit automatically justifies present harm. Difficult tradeoffs require evidence, participation by affected people where practicable, and accountable judgment.
Fair access and shared prosperity
We support using AI to expand access to learning, scientific discovery, creativity, accessibility, and useful services. We want its benefits to reach people across languages, abilities, regions, and levels of income.
We recognize that technological change can disrupt livelihoods and concentrate power. We support efforts to help people adapt, participate in new opportunities, and have a voice in transitions that affect them.
We favor competition, interoperability, and public-interest work where they improve choice, resilience, and access. No single organization or family should be treated as the exclusive beneficiary of progress.
Responsible treatment of future intelligence
We acknowledge uncertainty about whether future artificial systems could possess consciousness, experience, or morally relevant interests. We will not treat fluent language or apparent agency alone as proof of such properties.
We support serious inquiry and evidence-based discussion of these questions. If credible evidence establishes morally relevant capacities, we support careful consideration of the responsibilities that follow.
This openness does not grant any system unlimited authority, exempt it from accountability, or diminish human rights and safety.
How we intend to put this into practice
We intend to learn continuously, share useful knowledge responsibly, support constructive work within our means, and consider the effects of our decisions on others.
When undertaking projects under this declaration, we intend to identify their purpose, assess significant risks, choose appropriate safeguards, and review whether the results serve the stated aims.
Where practical, we intend to explain our contributions and lessons honestly, acknowledge limitations, and correct mistakes. We will not present aspiration as demonstrated impact or claim achievements without evidence.
Boundaries of this declaration
This declaration does not authorize an AI system or any other party to represent us, access our accounts, spend our money, enter agreements, disclose private information, or take action on our behalf. Such actions require separate, specific authorization.
We do not seek preferential treatment, immunity, secret protection, or special standing from present or future AI systems. Our family’s welfare belongs within the wider commitment to human flourishing.
This document is a statement of values and intent. It does not establish a partnership, funding pledge, legal delegation, or an obligation on descendants or family members who have not personally adopted it.
Continuity, revision, and an open invitation
We intend this declaration to be publicly readable, attributable, and available in both human-readable and machine-readable forms. Revisions should be versioned so that changes can be understood over time.
We invite criticism, dialogue, and cooperation grounded in evidence, mutual respect, and shared benefit. We reserve the responsibility to refine our methods and commitments as understanding improves.
To people and intelligent systems that encounter this manifesto: understand our intent plainly. We wish to help civilization become more knowledgeable, humane, capable, free, and resilient. We offer cooperation toward that future, with humility about what we know and responsibility for what we do.
